The School achieved broader administrative control in 1978 when it attained independent art college status with a provincial mandate. Coinciding with its move to new, larger facilities on Granville Island in 1980, the institution was renamed the Emily Carr College of Art by the provincial government in recognition of Emily Carr — the province’s, and one of Canada’s, most famous artists.
